Renewable energy harnessed from solar power offers a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to meet the worlds.
The Royal Command was received on June 8, 2022 at TashiChho Dzong to take up the Solar Initiative to build Bhutanese capacity (technology and manpower) in harnessing solar power for energy security and import substitution through the Skilling of Desuups.
In light of the growing popularity and adoption of solar power globally as a renewable energy resource, this solar initiative is also envisioned to promote and pave the way for similar uptake in the country by both public and private sectors tapping into the huge solar potential of 12 GW capacity that exists in the country as Alternate Renewable Energy Policy. The Royal vision was Solar Rooftops over Thimphu up to Chuzom.
To take the Royal Vision forward, the DSP Solar Initiative (DSP-SI) was instituted under the His Majesty’s Secretariat in 2023 with Dasho Bharat Tamang Yonzen, a Member (HM) of Royal Privy Council of Bhutan as the Chairman of the DSP-SI Board of Directors, and Project Director, as the Project Lead for the Project Implementation Department (PID). The Board of Directors functions as an advisory body to the PID set up under His Majesty’s Secretariat (HMS). PID has a team of skilled engineers led by the Project Director on deputation from various agencies and on contractual basis.
Driving Bhutan’s renewable energy transition through Skilling and Innovation.
To power Bhutan’s future energy through smart, innovative and sustainable renewable energy solutions.
DSP Solar Initiative has received Royal Approval in April 2025 to incorporate DSP-SI as a corporate legal entity under the DSP, HMS as the principal Shareholder. DSP-SI is incorporated as a public limited company under the name “Norion Renewable Energy Limited (NREL)”, derived from the combination of Nor (symbolizing wealth and prosperity) and ion (representing energy and technology) technology under the provisions of the Companies Act of Bhutan 2016.
